Satan

God uses names and name changes in the Bible to make statements, and to impart wisdom, both to the one who's name is changed and to us who study the Word of God.. God changed Abram's name which meant Father, to Abraham which means father of NATIONS! This name change helped Abraham, to remember Gods promise and of course everythime Abraham spoke his own name he reinforced his faith by speaking out the promise of God!. God told Abraham, that he would be father of many nations, but Abraham needed faith to accept and believe that! Here he was, nearly 100 years old, married to a woman about 90 years old that had never given birth to  even one child. The Bible says Sarah's womb was barren.  God was helping Abraham when he changed his name. He was helping him to realize that God is bigger then circumstances! He was making Abraham speak the promise   by using the promise as a name!

What has this to do with Satan? Satan also underwent a name change. Satan when he was created was named Lucifer, which means "light bearer" (Isaiah 14:12-13).  Lucifer was created as an angel. Lucifer was an archangel, referred to as the anointed cherub (Ezekiel 28:13-15). He was created with musical instruments actually inside his being. Angels were created by God as "helpers". They have a purpose and that purpose was to glorify God and do God's will. God must have given angels some limited form of free will and free thought, as we see that Lucifer became dissatisfied with his position in Heaven. He became haughty and prideful and wanted God's Position! This resulted in a war in heaven and ultimately resulted in him being kicked out and taking with him one third of the Angels, his name underwent a change! His new name Satan means "adversary".The angels that deserted God to serve satan are now called demons, devils or evil spirits.

The name Satan in the Hebrew and Aramaic means adversary or one that stands against or opposes. This is a perfect description of that old rascal Satan! He is so angry that his plan to overthrow and take God's place failed, that he is  interested in only one thing, opposing God. He uses any method he can to do this. Since he can't come against God directly he attacks God's creation, man. It is often said that satan hates mankind, but truth be known, satan is so prideful, haughty, and self centered,  he doesn't even consider mankind worthy of his direct hate, in fact satan merely disdains men. Satan sees men as a way to oppose and hurt God and nothing more.  Actually Satan, like most self-centered beings, is very stupid!  Satan doesn't really even understand what men are or why God made them!  All satan knows is God loves men and that is reason enough for satan it want to steal from, kill, and destroy all that men are or have.

So far satan looks pretty powerful and scary Huh? But You must remember God is the Supreme Being! God is in control of everything! So there must be a reason God allowed satan to do all he did and is doing, right? RIGHT! Satan represents choice to mankind. Remember please, God wants Children by choice! God doesn't want pets or puppets! He wants Children that choose to be obedient! How, when everything is good and pleasant, does one choose good? There must be an alternate choice, Right?

If you live in a totally white world, where there is no color at all, where every object is white, how do you answer the question; What is your favorite color? You Can't! To choose a favorite color there must be more than one color present! Satan serves God in giving God's men a choice! So Satan, that old bonehead, even in his rebellion and hatred of God, serves God's purpose! Isn't that a hoot! Before you accept Jesus you are subject to Satan and his minion. You are a pawn that satan uses against other men and against God and Gods Will. When you give your life to Jesus is is as though your passport is changed. It is transfered from the kingdom of darkness and to the Kingdom of Light. (Colossians 1:13) You at your re birth are no longer subject to satan but become a citizen of the Kingdom of God here on earth.  In fact the New Tesament is full of verses indicating that we, "In Christ" are no longer subject to satan and that we have been given authority over HIM and HIS FOOTSOLDIERS! (Luke 10:19 and Mark 16:17+18)
